Competition
To challenge talented designers, furniture and cabinet manufacturers to design innovative and practical cabinetry solutions tailored to one of three distinct living situations, incorporating Blum hardware fittings: Functional Living, Harmonious Living, or Individual Living. The furniture design needs to fit in a space of 18sqm. Multi-use furniture pieces and nonkitchen related living space pieces are encouraged.

1. Functional Living

Focus on maximizing space and utility
Designs should incorporate smart storagesolutions, multi-functional furniture, and accessibility features
Must use Blum hardware fittings such as softclose hinges, lift systems, and drawer runners
Ideal for small apartments, tiny homes, or urban living spaces

2. Harmonious Living

Emphasize aesthetics and balance
Designs should create a sense of peace and tranquillity, using natural materials, soft colours, and ergonomic layouts
Must include Blum hardware fittings that enhance the smooth operation and seamless integration of cabinetry.
Perfect for family homes, wellness retreats, or eco-friendly living spaces

3. Individual Living

Highlight personalization and uniqueness
Designs should reflect the personality and lifestyle of the individual, incorporating custom features, bold colours, and innovative shapes
Must feature Blum hardware fittings to ensure high functionality and durability
Suitable for artist studios, bachelor pads, or personalized home offices

How to enter

Eligibility

Open to all professional furniture and cabinet manufacturers who meet the below criteria

Open to all professional furniture and cabinet manufacturers who meet the below criteria
Have been in manufacturing industry for 5 years
Written references with images of previous work from at least two previous jobs
List previous hardware suppliers
Portfolio with working drawings and photographs

Registration and Submission

Participants must submit a comprehensive project proposal including:

Design sketches with detailed measurements – elevations and floorplans – to scale 1:50 or 1:100
Artist renderings of the living area – perspective views
(Digital or hand drawn will be accepted)
A detailed description of how Blum hardware is integrated into the design

Submissions to be sent to competitions.bza@blum.com no later than 24 March 2025. No late submissions will be accepted.

Trend Alignment: Incorporation of current design trends and furniture innovations
Craftsmanship: Quality and precision of the cabinetry work
Functionality: Practicality and usability of the overall design

Terms and conditions

Participants cannot be employed by Blum South Africa or co-sponsors
Participants cannot be immediate family members of employees at Blum South Africa or co-sponsors
Participants need to reside in South Africa and have a valid identification for travel purposes
Prize cannot be exchanged for cash
Any expenses incurred before, during and after Decorex will not be covered by Blum South Africa
Travel to and from Decorex at own expense
DB board and walling at own expense
The judges' decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into
Blum South Africa reserves the right to amend the competition rules at any time
Entries that do not meet the competition and submission requirement criteria will be disqualified
